ROUTINE. Having a pre-shot routine is important. With tee shots, chips, irons, I:

1. Take two or three practice swings;
2. Get 10 feet behind the ball and face the target;
3. Visualize the shot I want to hit;
4. Set up to the ball and hit it.

On putts, after I read the green, I go 10 feet behind the ball facing the target and try to visualize the ball going in, take two practice swings next to it, then sltoke the ball, shorter on the way back and smooth accelerate through to the hole.

GENERAL THOUGHTS. Try not to think too much. The more things you think about, the worse you’re probably going to hit. Aim for the fairway. When I’m on the practice tee, I try to invent competition scenarios so I’m not just hitting as hard as I can. If there are flags or trees, I use them as targets. I say to myself: “This is the right side of the fairway. This is the left.” You practice how you play. Commit to the shot you want to hit. Don’t second-guess yourself.

ATTITUDE. Everyone struggles at some point with something. Earlier in high school, if I had a bad hole, I’d think negatively and it would keep getting worse and worse. You have to realize that the best players in the world have bad days. You want those bad days to be as good as possible. Sometimes the weather makes it hard to play. You can’t let the conditions get to your head. Understand that sometimes, par is a good score. Sometimes bogey is too. If you want to be the best, learn to accept those kinds of things. Be patient. Be confident. Practice as much as you can.

DRAWING THE BALL

The Quickest and Easiest
Way to Draw the Ball”, and it’s sure to make a lot of people
very happy. Next week’s tip is going to focus on how to avoid
the hook, and then we’ll move on to the short game.

I’ll tell you right now… this is going to be painless, contrary to
what you may think. I’ll start with a single definition.

Level Shoulder turn – a turn that stays level with the ground
(parallel to the ground) through the backswing.

So, now that we have that out of the way, let’s continue on with
this quick and easy tip to draw the ball. And if you’ve battled a slice
for years upon years, just wait until you try this. The next time out
to the range, your slice is going to be dramatically reduced.

Here it is. Instead of taking your normal shoulder turn (whatever
that may be), focus on keeping your shoulder turn as level as possible
(parallel to the ground). So as you are setting up to the ball, feel your
feet on the ground to determine if there is an uphill or downhill lie. Then
in your backswing, just focus on keeping your shoulders level to the
ground.

Now, this may actually produce a HOOK of all things, so remember
to adjust accordingly. And remember that you are attempting to wrap
that club around your body. You want a horizontal swing plane, not
vertical. That’s what this level shoulder turn is really accomplishing. You’ll
find it so much easier to release through the ball correctly, and to square
up the face of your club at impact.

Give that a try on your next trip to the range and you’ll be amazed to see
that dreaded slice going away, especially if you use this in conjunction with
the rest of the “The Simple Golf Swing    system.

I know this probably seems
incredibly simple to anyone who has been battling a slice forever, but just
remember that simple solutions are usually the most effective.

Junior Golf Clubs

Junior golf equipment has come a long way in recent years. Gone are the days when young golfers had to use adult clubs that had been cut down to size.

But with all the different types of clubs to choose from, there are a few things to remember when buying junior clubs.

Length
Length is the first consideration. The trick is to find a set of clubs that is the right length for the junior golfer, but also a set that the junior can grow with. Remember that it is OK for the junior to choke down or grip down on the club. You just don’t want them to move their hands down the grip too much.

The basic rule is this: if the junior is choking down more than 1½ to 2 inches, he or she is choking down too much. Choking down more than two inches can change their whole swing, requiring them to manipulate the swing to get the club around their body. A set of clubs whose length requires the junior to grip down only one inch allows them to make a normal swing at the ball, while probably have enough length to get a second year out of the set.

Shaft Flex
The next consideration is shaft flex. The main problem with cut-down clubs for juniors is the stiffness of the shafts. When you take 4-5 inches of length off a golf club, you make the shaft extremely stiff. And this explains why juniors using cut-down clubs are unable to get any height on their shots.

One good thing with new sets is that the manufacturers are now making shafts that are the right flex for kids’ swing speeds. Using light-weight steel and graphite have made junior golf clubs more playable. The shafts of junior clubs today are so flexible that you can bend them with your hands. So check to make sure that your child’s set of clubs has a nice, flexible shaft.

Weight
The weight of the golf club is also very important to junior golfers. If the club is overly heavy, the child will struggle to take the club to the top of the backswing. The struggle to get the club back causes a manipulation of the swing that results in inconsistency. A lighter club will help the junior get the club in the correct position at the top of the swing, and lead to an easily repeatable swing.

Just like with shaft flex, most club companies make junior clubs with lighter heads and shafts. So before you buy, just make sure to check the overall weight of the clubs. You want clubs that are light enough to fit your child’s age.

Grip Size
The last consideration is grip size. Paying attention to grip size for young golfers is a new thought in the last few years. In the past, clubs were cut down and any grip that fit the shaft was put on. But oversized grips cause the same problems for juniors as they do for adult golfers. If the grip feels like a baseball bat, it’s going to change the swing mechanics.

So when buying a set of junior clubs, make sure they are fitted with junior grips. If you’re changing grips, ask for junior grips with a core size of .50. These thinner grips will make a difference in your child’s game.

As adults, we realize how tough golf can be some days and how much the right equipment can help our games. By keeping these considerations in mind when buying junior golf clubs, you can help your junior play better golf, and more importantly, have a better time on the golf course.

What to look for when buying your First set of Clubs

Set Your Budget

Golf clubs can be very expensive. How much you are willing to spend might be tied to how dedicated to the game you think you’ll be. On the other hand, if you have plenty of money to spend and want top-of-the-line equipment, go for it. A good option for many beginners, however, is looking for an inexpensive first set. That way, if you don’t follow through with the game, you haven’t wasted much money.
•Research Prices in the Pro Shop

Understanding Shaft Options

Two basics of golf shafts that beginners should most pay attention to are shaft composition (steel or graphite) and shaft flex (how much the shaft bends during the swing). Graphite is lighter and can help generate swing speed; steel is more durable and cheaper. Women and seniors will most likely benefit from graphite shafts with a softer flex. Younger, stronger men might go with regular or stiff shafts, but keep in mind that most teaching pros say many golfers use shafts that are too stiff.

What About a Clubfitting?

If your first set of clubs is going to be a new one, you might consider a clubfitting. Many teaching pros do an in-depth clubfitting that lasts 30-45 minutes. If you don’t do that, then being measured in a pro shop to make sure the clubs you choose are well-suited to your body type can’t hurt. The standard, off-the-shelf length for golf clubs corresponds to a male who is 5-foot-10. If you are around that size, then standard will probably work just fine. If much shorter or taller, get fitted.

The Clubs Can Make Golf Easier
There’s no substitute for a good golf swing. But brand new golfers can make it easier on themselves by choosing clubs that are geared to higher-handicappers (also known as “game improvement clubs”). Choose irons that are perimeter weighted and cavity-backed. Look at “hybrid” sets, where the long irons (3-, 4- and sometimes 5-irons) are replaced by utility clubs. Get a driver with more loft, not less. Pay no attention at all to what the Tour players are using.
Ask Around and Shop Around
Ask your friends who golf for their recommendations. Walk into a pro shop and ask for advice. Ask your friendly neighborhood golf pro. What would they recommend for someone like you? It’s a great way to get ideas. When you’re finally ready to shop, make sure to shop around. Price and selection can vary from one pro shop (or department store, or garage sale, or whatever) to another. Identify your price range and stick to clubs you can afford.

If you want to start out with name-brand clubs – but how do I know which brand to buy?

Buying name-brand clubs certainly isn’t a necessity, especially for a beginner. But most golfers, at some point, will plop down some money on a nice, shiny set of clubs from the likes of Titleist, Callaway, TaylorMade, Ping or many of the other top-tier clubmakers.

Here are some suggestions to help you choose the brand you’ll wind up buying:

• Ask around. Your friends who golf probably have some strong opinions on who makes the best clubs.

• Watch your fellow golfers on the course.  Get an idea of what others on the course are playing.

• Comparison shop. You might want Brand A, but discover that Brand B is much less expensive. Both have good reputations. Which do you buy? If you’re like most people, Brand B.

Read golf magazines, which often review clubs or feature articles on manufacturers.

• Ask your friendly local golf pro. Just keep in mind that many of your friendly local golf pros may have ties to certain manufacturers.

• Find a demo day that’s coming up in your area and make plans to attend

Wedges

There are several types of wedges,  the gap wedge, sand wedge ,lob wedge and pitchingwedge . The pitching wedge is part of the  off-the-shelf set of irons for sale they usually include a 3-iron through a pitching wedge.
Wedges are the most lofted of irons but they are often talked about separately because they are specialized clubs.

The one important thing to look out for when searching for the best golf wedge is a consistent transition form the grooves to the flat face of the wedge. Meaning you need a good sharp edge(not razor sharp) on each groove to generate spin on the ball.

Pitching wedge
This club will usually come with your set when it is purchased. The loft on these clubs are found to be between 46 and 50 degrees. This club is used anywhere from 125 yards into the pin.

Gap wedge
This club can be purchased separately from any online retailer and comes in many different varieties. The loft on these clubs is usually found to be between 51 and 54 degrees. This club is used to fill the gap between the pitching and sand wedge.

Sand wedge
This club will usually come with your set when it is purchased. The loft on these clubs is normally found between 55 and 59 degrees. This club is used from 95 yards into the pin and also out of the sand traps or green side bunkers.

Lob wedge
This club can be purchased separately from any online retailer and comes in many different varieties. The loft on these clubs are normally found to be between 60 and 64 degrees. This club is used for shorter very high controlled shots that stop quickly

Grooves in golf wedges have improved incredibly over the past number of years because the manufactures have started to machine cut them instead of casting them from moulds into the club face. This casting process has proven to be too inconsitent, where as CNC machining the face makes them perfectly consistant from groove to groove and wedge to wedge.

Golfers can also choose from raw or coated materials for their golf club wedges. Golfers can get a little more spin on their golf wedges by picking raw models that have not been coated with traditional protective chrome plating. These clubs begin to rust quickly after use, which creates added friction on the shots, therefor more spin.

All irons, including wedges, feature a design property known as “bounce.” Bounce is the angle that is made by the metal built-up on the sole of the club and the front edge of the club. This is known as the golf wedge bounce angle.
As a general rule of thumb if you play on a course with a harder turf and firmer sand in the traps you should be using wedges with less bounce. The lower amount of bounce will help the clubs leading edge dig down easier into the turf and through the rest of the shot.

Junior Golf Instruction

Golf is a great game for all the family, there is no better way of spending time with your kids or grandkids playing golf.

We must make it fun for the kids and keep it fun, when it is no longer fun for them they lose interest.

Golf is called the Lifetime game and can be played at all ages, you can play with your friends, parents, grandparents and at what ever level you maybe you can enjoy it so much more if you learn the basic principles at an early age.

I have put together a few of the fundamentals for learning to play golf while having fun learning the great game of golf.

JUNIOR GOLF CLUBS AND EQUIPMENT

It is very important for young golfers learning to play the game to have the right equipment. They must have clubs that are the correct length and lighter than adults clubs so it is easier for them to swing. I have written another page on Club length, shaft flex, weight and grip size which you can CLICK HERE to view.

A  junior golf glove would be a good idea if you child starts to get serious as the hands aren’t use to the work they are about to do.

JUNIOR GOLF BALLS

Some companies have brought out specifically designed balls for Juniors that have more dimples and they say go further, but really if they are just starting out, any hard covered distance ball will be good enough for them to lose. Just keep away from the soft covered Balata Balls that the pros use, they don’t last as long when learning the game and they are twice as expensive.

JUNIOR GOLF LESSONS

The best place to start is on the practise fairway, I know they want to go out there ans smash a driver, but really start them out with a 7 iron and lets get the Basic fundamental right from the start, lets work on Grip, stance, swing and posture.

GRIP

To get the perfect golf grip just, follow the 5 simple steps listed below:

1. With the golf head down, grip using only the last three fingers and the pad of your left hand. Grasp with your left hand and adjust the club so the grip is in your fingers, not your palm.

2. Make sure your left hand’s thumb is straight down. The point where your thumb meets your hand should be near the top of club.

3. Next, grip with the fingers of your right hand. Note the small vertical crease in your right palm near the wrist. Overlap the creases of your hands.

4. Grab the pinky of your right hand with the index finger of your left. Note the index finger and thumb of right hand. You should see a ‘V’ where they meet. That vertex (the point where they meet) should point to your right shoulder.

5. Make sure your right thumb is not running straight down the club but instead is pointed slightly toward your right shoulder.

This is the basic overlapping grip. If your child is very young and can’t overlap, they can try the interlocking grip, where the right little finger and the left index finger interlock to keep the hands together (Tiger Wood does this), this is for the right handed player.

Alignment
At address your body (feet, knees, hips, forearms, shoulders and eyes) should be positioned parallel to the target line. When viewed from behind, a right-handed golfer will appear aimed slightly left of the target. This optical illusion is created because the ball is on the target line and the body is not.

The easiest way to conceptualize this is the image of a railroad track. The body is on the inside rail and the ball is on the outside rail. For right-handers, at 100 yards your body will appear aligned approximately 3 to 5 yards left, at 150 yards approximately 8 to 10 yards left and at 200 yards 12 to 15 yards left.

DRILLS

Chip With Eyes Closed Drill:
Just like it sounds. Hit chip shots at the driving range with your eyes closed, making your best effort to achieve contact. This helps you child develop feel and awareness.

Right Heel Up Drill:
This is a good one for beginners or those who have trouble getting the ball up in the air. Take your normal stance, then bring the right heel of your foot up so that the toe is touching the ground. Hit some balls like this (starting with chip shots) and make sure the heel stays up the entire time (backswing, downswing, and follow through). This helps the golfer hit the ball on a descending blow as it puts the body in a position that makes ‘hitting down on the ball’ easier. It also discourages the ’scoop’ at the ball and promotes good lag.

Pull Your Arms Drill:
This is one of my favorites and you don’t even use a club. Take your normal stance and pretend the club is in your left hand. Grab your left elbow with your right hand and pull your arm back so that it is parallel to the ground, parallel to your body line and parallel to the target line, keeping the right elbow close to the body. Stop. This is what I consider to be the ideal position at this point of the full swing. If you remove your hand from your elbow and take your normal grip as the arm is parallel to the ground, you will be in the correct position. Make sure that the majority of your body weight is on the right side. Try the opposite for the ‘release’. Grab the right elbow with the left hand, (pretending that the club is in the right hand) and pull the right arm forward. Again, when it is parallel to the ground it should also be parallel with the body line and target line and if you were to take your right hand off the left elbow and put it in the ‘virtual grip’, you would again be in a great position, fully released down the target line with the majority of body weight on the left side. This drill teaches the proper take-away, and the proper release of the golf club. Straight back, Straight Through.

Stack and Tilt

The stack and tilt golf swing is a new golf swing that has become popular with quite a few high profile tour pros such as Aaron Baddeley and former US Masters winner Mike Weir.

It basically involves a much more centred golf swing than the common swing model that most tour pros use and is usually taught by teaching pros.

The stack and tilt golf swing can be an extremely effective solution for better players who want to improve your golf game and if you are prone to hooking or pushing the ball, faults often associated with leaving the weight on the right side (for right-handed golfers) and then using excessive arm action in an effort to correct the swing. The stack and tilt golf swing can also help higher handicap golfers who have inconsistencies with their ball contact, i.e. if you tend to hit the ball fat or thin then due to the restriction of weight shift a more consistent ball strike can be achieved.

In effect one of the most attractive qualities of the stack and tilt golf swing is that the point where the club impacts the ground can be controlled much more easily than with a conventional swing. One note of caution is that trying to use the stack and tilt if you have a tendency to swing over the top can further compound the problem. That said overall, the stack & tilt is a steeper more compact swing than the norm and is ideal for crisp and consistent ball striking, but it can Imporve your golf Game.

How to get out of Bunkers

These steps will ensure that you have the right mechanics so you can get out of bunkers. Once you’ve read these steps, practice them and get used to hitting out of bunkers, and they will become just as natural as a regular short game shot. These steps will give you the solid foundation and teach you how to get out of bunkers  and it will improve your golf game.

Here are the steps: (note: These steps apply to a normal sand bunker. Not wet or hard sand)

1. Choke down on the golf club (Have your right index finger about an inch from the bottom of the grip). Choking down gives you control of the club and allows you to “feel” the shot rather than hitting it.

2. Narrow your stance a little and play the ball a few inches forward in your stance. This will also aid in controlling the shot, and it will contribute to higher ball flight.

3. Dig into the sand with your feet a little and get comfortable.

4. Keep your body completely still throughout (no twisting hips).

5. Start your swing with your arms and keep your swing vertical. The end of the grip butt should be pointed at the ball at the top of your backswing. (Don’t bring the club straight back, remember steep is better here!)

6. Your left arm should be parallel to the ground and fully extended at the top of your swing.

7. Then start your downswing at the sand focusing to hit 1 inch behind the ball. Don’t focus on hitting the ball, hit the sand an inch behind and the ball will get out every time! That makes it so much easier for you to get out of bunkers

8. Your arms and body follow the ball as it leaves the sand.

9. Remember – a steep angle into the sand is key here.  You don’t have to swing too hard; we are not blasting the ball out, we are advancing it.

It’s that easy to get out of bunkers and I’m sure this will cut shots off your score and Improve your Golf Game.

Drill:

Go into a bunker and take 3 clubs your pitching wedge, sand wedge, and a lob wedge(if you have one). Remember that you can get creative with shots; just because it’s a sand wedge doesn’t mean that you’ll “feel” the most comfortable or get the best results. But I want you to notice the difference in design and performance.

Hit a few shots with each club and really notice the difference in how the ball comes out of the sand. Then choose the club that bests suits you. But remember, with all these clubs swing steep and hit 1 inch behind the ball. You can even draw a line behind the ball and aim for that line.

At home, office, or at the course take practice swings and focus on bringing the club up at a steep angle. Watch as your grip end points to the ground. And stop there – this is the position that you want to be in. A great way to see if the grip is pointed over the ball is sticking a tee in the grip handle. Do that a few times to ensure that you know where to stop the golf club and start your steep downswing. Then the downswing is easy! Just hit an inch behind the ball. Practice this for a few days then go have fun in a bunker! I’m sure it will Improve your Golf Game.

How to Get out of a Bunker with a Buried Lie“, and this lesson could really help you out in a situation where a buried lie could potentially add a few unneeded strokes to your round.

This is one of the most feared shots in all of golf by the amateur. Why? Because it looks so intimidating when you can barely see you ball, but it doesn’t need to be that way. You will be hitting great shots and impressing your friends when you follow these steps!

Let’s say that you just don’t have a “fried egg” (where 50% of the ball is buried) but only the very top of the ball is visible. What do you do? Follow these steps and you’ll be able to hit any lie that you have in a bunker.

Here’s how you get out of a Bunker with a “Fried Egg” lie:

1. Choke down on the golf club, about in the same position as a normal bunker shot (1-2 inches from the bottom of the grip).

2. Take your normal stance, however open it up a little bit.

3. The majority of your weight should be on your front foot

4. Close your clubface and press your hands forward just a little (this will ensure you to drive the ball out of the sand).

5. Keep your lower body still! This is so important, especially in this shot!

6. Just like a normal bunker shot take a steep backswing so that the butt of the club is pointed at the ball. *Remember that your left arm is going to lead this shot and will be completely parallel with the ground. Your right elbow is in the locked position.

7. When you start your downswing do not shift your weight - keep the majority of your weight on your front foot.

8. So once you’ve started your steep downswing hit about 2 inches behind the ball. This is very important because if you try and hit the ball first you’ll just drive it back into the sand. By hitting 2 inches behind the sand will actually lift the ball out your clubface really doesn’t even touch the golf ball. *Remember it’s very important to keep your clubface closed so that is can drive the ball out!

9. Remember to swing through the sand and not stop once you’ve hit the sand.

10. Keep your angle steep throughout the shot.

Drill:
At the practice bunker stomp a few balls almost completely submerged (make sure you can only see a little of the ball. This will give you so much confidence because this only happens in a small percentage of sand play. Focus on keeping your club face closed throughout your swing….I can’t stress this enough!

Putting these few basic bunker technique will help you get out of bunkers and  Improve your Golf Game.

Instructional System -Uneven Lies

Here are a few helpful hints on how to hit the Uneven Lies in Golf
UPHILL LIE
Let’s start with the easiest shot in golf, the up-hill lie. If you
struggle with this shot, you probably swing the golf club to
vertical into the ground and hit a fat shot. Before you prepare for
an uphill lie, you need to think of a few important items first.

1. Make sure you take a less lofted club. When you have an uphill
lie
, it will make the ball go HIGHER and SHORTER.

2. The ball will have a tendency to hook to the left, so aim a
little to the right.

3. To avoid hitting the shot fat, check your shoulder alignment and
make sure they are parallel to the ground you are standing on. If
you are on an uphill lie, your back shoulder should be a little
lower that your leading shoulder.

4. The ball should be positioned according to what club you are
using, as though you were on a level lie. (A bit forward for longer
clubs.)

5. You want to make sure you follow through HIGH after impact.

DOWNHILL LIE

Now we can move on to one of the hardest shots in golf, the down
hill lie. If you have a tendency to struggle with this shot, the
miss hit is usually a top. Follow the steps below and you will see
a huge change in your down hill shots.

1. Because the ball will fly lower, you can take a more lofted club
to help the ball go a little higher.

2. The ball will have a tendency to curve to the right, aim a little
to the left.

3. If you have your shoulders at address tilted level to the down
slope of your lie, this will encourage the club to swing DOWN into
the ball
(correct) and not up in the down swing. Thus, you will hit
the bottom of the ball and not the top.

4. Play the ball in your stance according to the club you are using
(again, a little forward for a longer club).

5. You want to make sure you follow through LOW to the ground after
impact.

BALL ABOVE YOUR FEET

Now we are back to an easy shot, the ball above our feet. If you
follow the steps below, you will not hit the ground behind the ball
anymore, and the ball above your feet will become your absolute
favorite shot in golf.

1. If you struggle with hitting the ball fat in these shots, make
sure you are standing taller than your normal stance.

2. The ball will have a tendency to fly to the left, aim a little
farther to the right.

3. DO NOT BEND YOUR KNEES

4. This is the main point, the golf club wants to swing more AROUND
your body
, let it…DO NOT TRY TO MAKE A NORMAL SWING…let the club
swing around you.

BALL BELOW YOUR FEET

The Haerdest Shot in Golf ,the dreaded, Ball Below Your Feet golf shot.
You have come to the right place

1. When the ball is below your feet, you will have a tendency to top
it to the right, whiff the ball, or shank it.

2. The address is the most important part of this shot. Bend your
knees and bend WAY over at address
. You ALMOST can not bend TOO
much.

3. The ball will have a tendency to go to the right, aim farther
left.

4. The golf club wants to swing up and down, NOT around. LET IT…It
will feel like a lob swing, this is correct. IF you make your
normal swing, you will whiff the ball completely.

If you are having trouble with consistency I recommend that you
look at 4 different aspects of your swing:

  • Spine Angle:  Whether your back is straight at set-up
  • Follow-Through Position:  Hold your follow-through at least 2
seconds and you’ll see an increase in consistency and muscle memory
    development
  • Position of hands at and through the impact zone:  Rotate you
hands through the impact zone (this will help with distance and
    power generation as well)
  • Head Down: Always do this.  Unfortunately many golfers overlook
    this fundamental
